Password Protect a PDF Online
Lock a PDF with a password using AES-256 encryption. The file is encrypted in your browser and is never uploaded.
Select PDF
Keep this password safe. Without it the file cannot be opened, and it cannot be recovered.
How it works
- Choose a PDF and type a password.
- Press Password Protect PDF. The protected copy downloads to your device.
- Anyone opening the file is asked for the password first.
Good to know
- Private. The PDF and the password stay in this browser tab. Nothing is sent to a server.
- Strong encryption. The file is locked with AES-256, the strongest standard PDF protection.
- Works in common readers. Adobe Reader, Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Preview and most phone apps can open it. Very old readers (before 2010) may not.
- Pick a long password. Protection is only as strong as the password. A short or common one can be guessed.
- Signed PDFs. Encrypting changes the file, so an existing digital signature will no longer verify.
